History
It is said that the Hylotl did not evolve on their homeworld through being at the top of the food chain like other species have. It is said that the Hylotl evolved through cooperation with the local wildlife on their home, through co-existance and harmony. They were able to convince even the most fiersome predators of their none-but-benevolent intentions. And it worked for them, as it almost became instinct for other animals on their home to leave them alone- or in some cases- actually seek out a Hylotl master who would take care of them.
It is this that is written in the ancient texts of their people...what remains of them. For over fifty years ago a terrible event occured...The Floran arrived. A Floran spawning pod came to their world, despite the fact that the planet is completely submerged in ocean the Floran adapted to the enviornment rather quickly, becoming the most dangerous invasive species ever to grace those deep oceans.
Nothing could stand in the Florans' way as they consumed and destroyed all in their way, even with the apex predators of the ocean on the Hylotls' side the Floran were just too many. It came to the point where the surviving Hylotl had to flee their home. Some sought help from other species in the universe, finding none who would help reclaim their homeworld, some just started over on other worlds, putting their unique skills for survival to use- albeit without even seeing a Hylotl before the creatures of other worlds were not as helpful to the peaceful inhabitants as the creatures of their homeworld.
Now the Hylotl are spread across the galaxy, their every belief is now tested, some have succumbed to lives of violence and danger, others cling to their old pacifist ways- hoping that maybe- just maybe- the Universe will take pity on them. There are very few Hylotl left, and unless a miracle comes they may be wiped from the universe forever.
Biology and Characteristics
Though the Hylotl originate on an entirely ocean world they are fully capable of operating on land. They are vegetarians- exclusively Vegetarians as they cannot absorb nutricion from meats- if anything it just makes them sick. However Hylotl are extremely well adapted to extreme temperatures, extreme heat and cold are nothing to a Hylotl due to their adaption to such things on their home world. More-so- they can see in the dark, and are physically very strong compared to other species...but their most impressive ability is the ability to actually communicate with any and all forms of life. This ability makes them not only peaceful but also highly empathetic. A hylotl psychiatrist is perhaps the most effective listener that the universe will ever see.
Granted- this ability can only get them so far, as they're vulnerable to the predators of the universe as much as anyone else, however given enough time and energy a Hylotl can actually tame beasts faster than any other species in the verse. They are gentle and peaceful creatures, however in order to survive many Hylotl have since taken to being mercenaries, bounty hunters, and even pirates. A Hylotl that embraces violence is not a Hylotl at all some of their race would say, and many are exiled for committing to such a life-style.

The Hylotl of the Federation are what remains of an escape ship fleeing the homeworld. It was an incedible stroke of luck that it was found by a Federation scout-vessel. The Avali ship was crewed by a pack calling themselves "Team SMG" and they were the first creatures in the Federation ever to make contact with the first Hylotl. They actually found the ship to be heavily damaged and evacuated the Hylotl aboard their vessel before it exploded, saving every soul aboard.
The Hylotl aboard that vessel now populate the ranks of the Federation, having become masters of infastructure, medicine and commerce in the organization, and are very much loved by everyone in its' ranks.
