HISTORY
The Floran are easily the youngest of all the races in the verse. They were born on a planet lost to time, no one remembers where they came from as their home has been lost amongst the thousands of worlds Floran have taken as their own. All that is known is that long ago a ship crashed on their home, and The Floran- while tribal and primitive...are smart. Floran- even at their most low technological point were capable of reverse-engineering the ship and building new craft to carry them to the stars...and were given a reason to, after they found out how tasty the crew were.
Since then The Floran are second only to the Avians in how spread they are across the galaxy, though they are not organized as other species tend to be, each colony essentially acting inedpendantly from the rest.
BIOLOGY AND CHARACTERISTICS
Floren are plants, and have all of the strengths and weaknesses all plants share. They are strongest when exposed to the infinite majesty of the sun, they are able to regrow parts of their body thought lost before...and they're carnivorous, EXTREMELY Carnivorous. They're known for their appetites when it comes to other creatures in the universe, finding standard flesh-and-blood animals quite delicious...including sentients. Some Floran actually prefer the meat of Sentient Creatures.
Floran have a tendancy to talk in the third person as well, referring to themselves as "Floran" in conversation, and others as "Meatbags". It is a mark of great respect when a Floran uses your proper name, and it means that they're much less likely to eat you in the event that they find themselves without food. Floren also do not technically have a gender, though the Floran that find themselves integrating with other species will select a pronoun that best fits how they are seen- or how they see themselves. Some Floran have even been known to will their forms to resemble what they percieve as "Gender Differences" between most other sentient species.
Floran also have an unusual life-cycle, older Floran tend to grow tall and completely change form to resemble large bulbous trees, from which more Floran will spawn, sometimes a new individual will spawn every hour on the hour for weeks at a time from such trees, sometimes it'll lay dormant for a hundred years before given the right stimuli to wake up. In any case newborn Floren come into the world hungry, very hungry. They are born with the knowledge on how to hunt, and the need to eat...so wherever there's a "Spawning Pod" sentients will want to beware, as potentially hundreds of infantile Floran are likely to be looking for their first meal.
FLORAN IN THE FEDERATION
The Floran of the Federation are an anomaly, the first of their kind. Where most Floran believe that non-plant life is not life at all these Floran have a deep respect for all forms of it, no matter where it comes from. It is a respect that comes from instinct and the seperation from the rest of their kind. The story begins with an Apex scientist named Jarad, Jarad was of The Conduit, seeking ways to weaponize a Floran spawning-pod against their enemies in the Miniknog.
Jarad brought in a Floran who went by the name of "Talia"...an elder who he believed was close to becoming a pod herself. Talia however was a thinker, a philosopher, a rare thing amongst her kind. She showed she was a gentle soul, whenever they attempted to feed her live animals she would refuse to eat, saying that she had no interest in The Hunt or The kill. She instead settled for the same sorts of nutrient packs that The Apex would eat for suthstenance.
Talia left an impression on Jarad, she'd frequently dine with him and listen to his ramblings, whatever was on his mind. She'd listen, then she'd know exactly what to say to help him in whatever way he needed. Jarad eventually found himself falling in love with her, his experiment. Talia didn't mind such an attraction, in fact she was quite interested in such things...wondering if she had that same capacity as well.
Neither of them would get the chance to find out.
Jarad suffered a fatal stroke one day, a natural and untimely death. Talia, seeing no more reason to hold onto the mortal world as she saw him die in front of him, did something that no Floran had ever attempted- ever thought to attempt. With her final act of conciousness she proceeded to actually re-write the base instinct of every Floran that would be born from her.
Since then the Floran that fill the Federations' ranks are all born from Talias' pod, all gifted with a respect for other life unlike any other in the galaxy. This however has netted them animosity with other Floran, who believe that all other life that is not born of plants is no more than their next meal.
