History
It's said that the human race is the most survivable in the galaxy, and this reputation is well earned. After the destruction of their homeworld(due to unknown circumstance) they spread out from earth faster than most other species could ever even concieve, establishing hundreds of colonies all throughout the galaxy- each independant of one another, none remaining in contact.
When the Apex found the first human colony they saw a potential test subject- the colonists of a ship called 117 had become the playthings of the Apex, and from the shadows they poked and prodded the people of the colony, from introducing a plague(which the colonists managed to fight off) to letting loose a Floran spawning tree on the colony world. Eventually the humans found out what was going on and managed to actually fight off their captors- taking their ship and reverse-engineering it.
From there the humans of colony 117 began attempting to reunify their race, dubbing themselves the Republic of Humanity. They have since become jaded and xenophobic due to their hostile interactions with other alien races.
BIOLOGY AND CHARACTERISTICS
Humans- physically are quite frail compared to other species, they have nothing in the way of natural weapons or defense mechanisms, what they do have however is adaptability. Humans are gifted with the ability to adapt to any enviornment- given enough exposure time. If they can't survive normally they're known for their ability to invent a way for them to survive. Humans are extremely inventive, given the right ammount of pressure they can solve any problem or adapt to any situation for the sake of survival. This instinct, this ability is what has given humanity the nickname "The cockroaches of the Universe."
HUMANS IN THE FEDERATION
The humans of The Federation generally come from colony 113, a colony from a small backwater desert world that was very nearly wiped out by hostile fauna. When the now dubbed Human Republic came, the colony numbered only 103 members. Initially they welcomed the assistance of The Republic, until they discovered that they had been agitating the animal-life specifically so that they would become hostile to the inhabitants.
Knowing this the colonists proceeded to do the one thing they knew would guarantee their freedom- run. They ran as far as their old rickety colony ship could carry them, eventually drifting through deep space due to loss of power and fuel. The crew was forced to go into cryogenic sleep and activate a distress beacon in the hope that someone friendly would arrive.
They did, the Grounded arrived. The Avian saviors repaired the human vessel and refuelled it, asking only that they join a federation that was being assembled on the planet of Amerish. Seeing no other choice, the residents of Colony ship 113 followed the Avian Vessel to Amerish- and they have been a part of the federation ever since.
